Matt Benson is an energy and environmental associate practicing in the Business Law Group at Cunningham Swan. Matt advises clients in his capacity as a business lawyer and a litigator with a focus on energy and environmental issues. Prior to joining Cunningham Swan, Matt practiced with two leading national law firms in Toronto, Ontario.
Matt provides vendors and purchasers with structuring, transactional, and risk-management advice in the development, sale, and acquisition of energy assets, including renewable energy projects. Matt has advised clients of all sizes, from small businesses to multinational joint ventures. He has experience with complex commercial contract negotiations, partnership and shareholder agreements and disputes, and government procurements for energy assets.
Matt also provides proactive risk-management and mitigation advice on regulated or environmentally sensitive assets and properties. Matt advises clients on matters involving contaminated lands, Brownfields remediation, licensing, permitting, and risk assessments. Matt also advises clients on environmental regulatory compliance matters, including import and export controls on regulated or controlled substances, stewardship programs, and product liability.
In litigious matters, Matt represents clients in judicial, quasi-judicial and regulatory contexts. Matt has experience with both small-scale litigation matters and complex multi-million and billion-dollar disputes. Matt acts for clients in proceedings before provincial courts, arbitration panels, and mediators. He represents and assists clients in complex commercial litigation matters, contaminated lands disputes, breach of contract and negligence, municipal land disputes, shareholder disputes, and construction matters.
