Matt Benson is a Partner in our Business Law group.
He advises clients on all aspects of corporate and environmental law matters. Matt studied Psychology at Queen’s University before attaining his L.L.B. at the University of Windsor in 2008. Matt gained extensive experience with a leading national/international law firm out of its Toronto office before returning to Kingston to work at Cunningham Swan.
Matt acts for vendors, purchasers, and lenders in asset and share transactions. He provides corporate, risk management, and structuring advice to a wide range of clients. Specifically, he advises on:
- Mergers and acquisitions
- Drafting and negotiating complex commercial agreements
- Corporate structuring and governance
- Corporate reorganizations
- Partnership and shareholder agreements
- Commercial leases
He acts for profit and not-for-profit corporations and provides advice across the full spectrum of corporate and governance matters. Matt also provides clients with risk-management and mitigation advice on regulated or environmentally sensitive assets. He advises clients on matters involving:
- Contaminated lands
- Brownfields remediation
- Licensing
- Permitting
- Risk assessments
- Environmental regulatory compliance matters
- Import and export controls on regulated or controlled substance
- Stewardship programs
- Product liability
Matt has experience with both small-scale litigation matters and complex billion-dollar disputes, representing clients in judicial, quasi-judicial and regulatory contexts.
On the weekends, Matt can be found camping, hiking, boating, swimming, and hosting barbecues for his friends and family.
